Liberia’s government has charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking and money laundering in connection with a $317 million cocaine shipment intercepted in Paynesville in July. Ex VP Jewel Howard-Taylor drug charge has quickly become one of the country’s most closely watched legal and political developments.

Justice Minister N. Oswald Tweh announced the charges on Wednesday, confirming that Jewel Howard-Taylor was formally charged under Liberia’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act of 2023.

The charges relate to a record cocaine haul discovered inside a warehouse in the VOA Community. Authorities say the investigation into the shipment remains active.

Tweh said Jewel Howard-Taylor faces offences including the unlicensed importation of controlled substances, unlicensed sale and distribution of drugs, and illicit trafficking.

The minister stressed that being charged does not amount to a conviction. He reminded the public that Howard-Taylor remains presumed innocent unless a competent court determines otherwise.

Three foreign nationals have also been charged in absentia over the same seizure, Tweh said. Liberia National Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman confirmed that investigators consider the cases connected, although he did not explain how Jewel Howard-Taylor became linked to the investigation.

The former standard bearer of the National Patriotic Party was drawn into the case on Wednesday morning when she was stopped at Roberts International Airport while preparing to board a flight to Accra for a women’s forum.

Immigration officers told her she could not leave the country and directed her to report to the police.

Howard-Taylor said she complied immediately.

“I was about to go to Accra to attend a women’s forum and I was informed that I’m not allowed to leave the country. They have asked that I report to the police station. I am on my way there,” she said in a message to supporters.

She later travelled to police headquarters with members of her legal team rather than under arrest. She was questioned for several hours before Tweh’s evening press conference confirmed that Jewel Howard-Taylor has formally become a part of the investigation.

The case comes amid a wider crackdown on cocaine trafficking in Liberia that has rattled the country’s security establishment this year. Authorities have made arrests, ordered suspensions and dismissed officials linked to two major cocaine seizures in 2026.

One earlier seizure was valued at nearly $19 million. The second, worth $317 million, is the consignment at the centre of the case against Howard-Taylor.

Reaction within her party has been cautious. National Patriotic Party chairman George Mulbah urged supporters to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.

He described the NPP as a law-abiding institution and said the party would await the outcome of the police investigation.

Jewel Howard-Taylor served as Liberia’s Vice President under George Weah from 2018 to 2024. The Jewel current development represents one of the most serious legal tests faced by a former holder of Liberia’s second-highest political office.

The case is likely to dominate political discussion in Monrovia in the coming weeks. Court proceedings have not yet been scheduled.

Investigators say the wider inquiry into cocaine trafficking through Liberia remains active. Further arrests could follow as the investigation develops.

For now, the Jewel Howard-Taylor and the case against her remain at the investigation and legal-process stage, with the former vice president presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
