Katsina Kidnapping Syndicate Busted Ten Days After Boy’s Abduction From Islamic School

Police have dismantled a seven-man Katsina kidnapping syndicate accused of abducting an eight-year-old boy from a street in the state capital, arresting six suspects and recovering N7.5 million believed to be part of the ransom paid by the child’s family.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the arrests on Saturday, 23 May 2026, saying the Katsina kidnapping syndicate bust was the first major operation carried out by its newly established Violent Crime Response Unit.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the victim was abducted on 13 May 2026 at around 6:00 p.m. while returning home from an Islamic school in the Katsina metropolis.

The child’s identity was withheld.

The following day, members of the Katsina kidnapping syndicate contacted the family. They initially demanded N50 million for the child’s release, and following negotiations, N17 million was eventually paid before the boy was freed.

That left a shortfall of N9.5 million that police have yet to account for. It is unclear whether the remaining sum was shared among members of the group or is still being traced as part of ongoing investigations.

The alleged mastermind, Nura Aliyu, 39, was identified in the police statement as a neighbour of the victim’s family. That detail has drawn attention. Investigators said Aliyu appeared to have used his proximity to the household to monitor the boy’s movements before the abduction.

The other five men arrested with him were named as Abubakar Aminu, 37; Ibrahim Muhammad, 51; Iliyasu Sani, 51; Abubakar Muhammad, 27; and Abdullahi Isma’il, 30. Police said all six confessed during interrogation and named a seventh member of the Katsina kidnapping syndicate, identified only as Abdul, who remains at large. A manhunt is under way.

Items recovered from the suspects included a Peugeot 307 saloon car, a Boxer motorcycle, and the N7.5 million in cash.

The arrests were carried out by the Violent Crime Response Unit, a squad that Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage launched this week and described as a coordinated, intelligence-driven structure capable of responding swiftly to emerging security threats.

Fage said the unit aligns with the reform agenda of Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.

The VCRU is part of a broader nationwide rollout. Similar units have been commissioned in recent weeks in Kano, Adamawa, Osun, and Ekiti states, all operating under the same directive from the Inspector-General.

The Katsina unit underwent a three-day intensive training programme before being deployed, with Fage charging its personnel to uphold professionalism and operate within the law.

That the alleged ringleader of the Katsina kidnapping syndicate lived next door to the victim’s family points to a pattern that security analysts have flagged across northern Nigeria. Criminals are increasingly using insider knowledge of victims’ routines to plan abductions, making urban residential areas less predictable than the rural flashpoints that have historically dominated the security conversation.

Katsina State has contended with mass kidnappings and banditry for years. Most attacks have taken place in rural communities and along highways, far from the state capital. A kidnapping carried out in the heart of Katsina metropolis, targeting a child on his way home from evening Islamic lessons, signals a shift that is likely to unsettle residents in urban areas that had felt comparatively secure.

The Katsina kidnapping syndicate case also raises pointed questions about the N9.5 million gap between the ransom paid and the cash recovered. Police have not yet explained how that money was spent or whether it has been traced.

Commissioner Fage commended the VCRU operatives for what he described as a swift and successful operation, and said the command would keep up pressure against kidnapping and violent crime across the state.

The case is under investigation.
