South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after helping his country reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in its history.

The South African Football Players Union confirmed the news on Saturday. The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture also issued a separate statement confirming his passing. Neither body disclosed a cause of death.

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams started two of Bafana Bafana’s three group matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, lining up against Mexico in a 2-0 defeat before starting again in a 1-1 draw with Czechia. He came off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea that sent South Africa into the round of 32 for the first time. He was an unused substitute when Canada eliminated the team on 28 June.

SAFPU described South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams in its statement as a gifted player and a proud servant of the game whose passing represents an immeasurable loss to his family, his clubs and the wider football fraternity. The union extended condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and everyone whose life he touched.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said in his tribute that South African football had lost one of its brightest young talents. He recalled reaching out to Adams personally to offer condolences after the midfielder’s grandmother, Marianna, died just a day before the Czechia fixture in Atlanta. McKenzie said Adams still chose to wear the national jersey and give his all despite the fresh grief, a decision he described as reflecting real depth of character.

Police in Cape Town have registered an inquest into the death of South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams after a body was discovered at a property on Military Road in the Schotschekloof area. The circumstances remain under investigation and no cause has been confirmed.

McKenzie urged the media and the public to exercise restraint and avoid speculation while Adams’s family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given space during what he called an incredibly difficult time. He added that any official information would be communicated by the appropriate authorities in due course.

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams came through the Stellenbosch FC academy, becoming the first graduate of that system to sign a professional contract with the club. He went on to make 139 senior appearances for the Cape Winelands side, helping them lift the 2023 Carling Knockout before his move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

At Sundowns, South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams added a Betway Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his honours within two years, with the continental trophy secured against Moroccan side AS FAR in May. He dedicated that winners’ medal to Oshwin Andries, a former Stellenbosch teammate who died in 2023 after being stabbed. Stellenbosch also lost another young player earlier this year with the death of Jeandre Gaffoor, a loss that had already shaken the club before Saturday’s news.

On the international stage, he was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, before earning his place in Hugo Broos’s squad for the World Cup in North America.

Stellenbosch FC said in a statement that it had learned of Adams’s untimely passing with profound sadness, extending condolences to his family and to everyone at Mamelodi Sundowns while calling for their privacy to be respected. Adams’s mentor, Brendine Johnson, told local reporters that things were still raw for those closest to him, speaking on behalf of a family still coming to terms with the loss.

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams is survived by his partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, and a young daughter. Tributes have continued to pour in from across South African football since the news broke on Saturday, with fans and former teammates remembering him as a humble and gifted player whose career had only just begun to flourish on the world stage.
