As organisations around the world mark International Women’s Day 2026, Transcorp Hilton Abuja has used the occasion to highlight the role women play in leadership within the hotel and in its wider community initiatives.
The global observance on 8 March recognises the achievements of women across economic, social and political life while encouraging institutions to expand opportunities that promote gender equality. According to UN Women, International Women’s Day also serves as a platform for advancing policies and initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for women worldwide.
The theme for 2026, “Give to Gain,” focuses on the idea that investing in women through opportunity, mentorship and support ultimately benefits organisations and societies.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, the hotel said the theme reflects its approach to building a more inclusive leadership structure within the hospitality sector.
The initiative aligns with broader diversity and inclusion policies promoted by Hilton Worldwide Holdings, the international hospitality group that operates the Hilton brand worldwide. The company has in recent years increased programmes aimed at supporting women in management and executive roles across its properties.
Female leadership within the hotel
At the Abuja property, several senior positions are currently held by women. Among them is Betty Aguiyi-Ironsi, who serves as Commercial Director and is recognised as the first indigenous Nigerian woman to hold the role at the hotel.
Another senior executive is Onyinye Ajoku, the hotel’s Director of Rooms. The position oversees guest accommodation services and operational management across the hotel’s extensive room inventory.
Hotel management says the growing presence of women in leadership positions reflects a deliberate effort to broaden opportunities for women within the hospitality industry. According to the hotel, inclusive leadership structures often contribute to stronger operational performance, improved guest experiences and a more engaged workforce.
Industry observers note that hospitality has historically offered significant employment opportunities for women, but leadership roles across the global sector have traditionally been dominated by men. In recent years, major hotel groups have introduced policies aimed at closing that gap through mentorship programmes and leadership development initiatives.
Community empowerment initiatives
Beyond internal leadership development, Transcorp Hilton Abuja also runs community programmes focused on women’s economic empowerment.
One of the flagship initiatives is the Business Empowerment Programme for Women, which forms part of Hilton’s sustainability framework known as Travel with Purpose. The programme was launched in 2017 to support young women interested in developing small fashion and tailoring businesses.
Participants in the programme receive training in sewing and garment production, as well as practical instruction in financial management, marketing, customer service and small business operations. According to the hotel, more than 60 young women have completed the programme since its launch.
The hotel says the goal is to equip participants with practical skills that allow them to establish independent businesses while contributing to the local economy.
Marking International Women’s Day
Management said International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in expanding opportunities for women in leadership while encouraging organisations to continue investing in programmes that support female advancement.
The hotel also noted that recognising the achievements of women within the organisation remains an important part of fostering a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion.
