When Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri was appointed Interim Chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State in January, he inherited practically nothing.
The party was formless. Its structure had collapsed. There was no machinery to inspire confidence among members or signal seriousness to the wider public.
Where most politicians would have seen a poisoned chalice, Ochiama-Nwaneri saw an opening. The stakes were real. Under Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission requires political parties to maintain functional state structures as a condition for participation in elections, meaning a party without organisation is not just weak, it is legally exposed.
A Different Kind of Party Official
Those who had watched Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri closely during his time as Deputy Chairman already knew what he was made of.
He was not the type to occupy a position and coast on the title. He was the engine room of the party, visible at every level, doing the kind of unglamorous structural work that rarely earns headlines but holds organisations together.
His commitment was not performative. His sacrifices were not announced. And his belief in what the Labour Party could become in Imo State never wavered, even when the conditions gave little reason for optimism.
The Rebuilding Work
Taking over an Imo Labour Party without structure or direction, Ochiama-Nwaneri set about the hard, methodical work of reconstruction.
He reorganised the party’s grassroots presence, brought coherence to its operations and built the kind of confidence among members that transforms a paper organisation into a genuine political movement.
Today, the Labour Party in Imo State commands respect across the state in ways that would have been difficult to imagine before he took the reins.
What now stands is not an accident. It is the product of vision, resilience, sacrifice and deliberate, relentless hard work.
The Verdict of Saturday’s Vote
On Saturday, 25th April 2026, delegates confirmed what those close to Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri’s Imo Labour Party work had long observed: the people recognise capacity, reward performance and understand who carries the strength, competence and character to lead.
He was elected Chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State for the next four years.
It was not a surprise to those who had watched him build. It was a confirmation.
What Comes Next
The expectations are enormous. An Imo Labour Party that has been rebuilt from near-nothing now has to prove it can compete, sustain momentum and translate organisational strength into electoral relevance.
If the journey so far is any measure, the future holds genuine promise.
The task ahead, however, belongs to more than one man. The newly elected State Working Committee, Local Government Area chairmen and their executives, and party members across Imo State all carry a share of the responsibility.
Through discipline, unity and focused leadership, what has already begun can be consolidated into something truly historic.
Proof That Service Still Matters
For those who have grown cynical about Nigerian politics, Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri’s Imo Labour Party story offers a rare counterpoint.
Dedication, loyalty and genuine service built this. Not patronage networks, not money politics, not the manipulation of structures. A man turned up, did the work and the party grew.
