Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, welcomed foreign ministers from BRICS nations in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to discuss the group’s role in addressing global and regional crises and formulating a unified response to the ongoing trade war with the United States.
In his opening remarks, Vieira highlighted BRICS’ potential to promote peace and stability through dialogue and cooperation. “With 11 member states representing nearly half of the world’s population and vast geographic and cultural diversity, BRICS is uniquely positioned to foster peace and stability,” Vieira said, advocating for renewed multilateralism and reforms to global institutions like the UN Security Council
The meeting, attended by prominent figures such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, addressed conflicts in Africa and humanitarian crises in Ukraine, Haiti, and Gaza (TASS, 2025). Vieira condemned the situation in Gaza, stating, “The resumption of Israeli bombings in Gaza and the continued obstruction of humanitarian aid are unacceptable”
The discussions are scheduled to continue until April 29, 2025
