Tragedy struck in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday morning when a LAGFERRY(Lagos Ferry Services) vessel carrying passengers suddenly burst into flames at a Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu suburb, leaving several passengers injured.
The incident which occurred around 6:00 a.m local time, amid heavy traffic congestion caused by the closure of Independence Bridge at Ahmadu Bello Way, Marina. As of press time, it remained unclear if there were any fatalities, while the exact cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
According to a statement released by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), which confirmed the incident and said that all passengers and crew members were evacuated safely.
The agency also said that four passengers were injured during the incident and are receiving treatment.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilised to the scene, working in close coordination with LAGFERRY, other boat operators and first responders to manage the situation effectively,” the statement reads.
“We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely, though four passengers suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
“We are currently conducting thorough preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways.”
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations, ensuring that all passengers were safely evacuated.
