Burkina Faso Trade Surplus Hits Record 2,320bn FCFA as Gold Exports Surge

Burkina Faso has posted its largest trade surplus on record. Fresh government figures show exports racing far ahead of imports through the first half of 2026.

Data released by the Direction Générale de l’Économie et de la Planification puts the Burkina Faso trade surplus at 2,320.4 billion FCFA for the six months to June. It is the strongest half-year external position the landlocked Sahelian country has ever recorded.

Total exports climbed to 4,643.7 billion FCFA. That is up 60.4% on the same period last year, according to the planning ministry’s figures. Imports grew far more slowly, rising 10.6% to 2,323.3 billion FCFA. That widening gap between what the country sells abroad and what it buys is what produced the Burkina Faso trade surplus.

Gold is doing most of the heavy lifting. Bullion sales alone rose by 1,790.8 billion FCFA, a jump of 70.6% year-on-year, the DGEP data shows. Mining products now make up 93.3% of all exports, up 5.6 percentage points from a year earlier. Few economies anywhere lean this heavily on one export line. The scale of the Burkina Faso trade surplus underlines just how far gold now carries the wider economy.

That mining dominance sits against a backdrop of elevated global bullion prices. Prices have held well above historic levels for much of 2026, driven by steady central bank buying and persistent geopolitical uncertainty. Ouagadougou’s transitional government has moved to capture more of that value at home. It has expanded state ownership of mining assets and routed artisanal gold through the state-run National Precious Substances Company, known as SONASP.

Agriculture has not vanished from the picture, even if its scale is far smaller than mining’s. Cotton, long Burkina Faso’s second export earner behind gold, added a further 47 billion FCFA in revenue over the same six months, the DGEP figures show. The crop still supports hundreds of thousands of rural households. Yet its share of total exports keeps shrinking against gold’s advance.

Officials have pointed to the wider Burkina Faso trade surplus as evidence that the country’s resource sovereignty push is delivering real fiscal returns. That push has been under way since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in September 2022. Gold earnings have helped fund health, education and security spending. The government continues fighting a jihadist insurgency across parts of the north and east.

The concentration carries obvious risk, though. A sharp fall in bullion prices, or any slowdown in output, could unwind much of this year’s Burkina Faso trade surplus just as quickly as it built up. Analysts who track the region keep pressing the same point. Diversification away from gold, including local processing of raw minerals and a broader spread of export goods, remains largely unfinished business.

For now, the surplus stands as one of the clearest economic wins the transitional authorities can point to. Whether the Burkina Faso trade surplus can be sustained once the current gold cycle turns is a separate question. Officials in Ouagadougou have yet to answer it in detail.
