Ohakim Congratulates Ndi Imo as State Marks Golden Jubilee

Former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, has extended warm congratulations to the government and people of the state as Imo marks its 50th anniversary since creation.

In a goodwill message issued to commemorate the Golden Jubilee on Tuesday, February 3, Ohakim described the anniversary as a moment of “deep reflection and gratitude,” noting that Imo’s journey over the past five decades has been defined by resilience, enterprise, and the enduring spirit of its people.

“Over the past fifty years, Imo State has produced men and women of industry, intellect, and character who have contributed immensely to Nigeria’s development across governance, education, commerce, and public service,” Ohakim said.

He paid tribute to the visionaries, leaders, and citizens whose sacrifices laid the foundation of the state following its creation in 1976, as well as those who have borne leadership responsibilities at different stages of its history. While acknowledging that the state’s journey has not been without challenges, Ohakim said perseverance and collective effort had enabled Imo to endure and make progress.

Reflecting on the future, the former governor called for renewed commitment to unity, equity, justice, and inclusive development, stressing that the state’s long-term progress depends on cooperation across communities, generations, and political divides.

“As we celebrate fifty years, our greatest task is to strengthen unity and shared purpose across our state. Only through mutual respect and collective responsibility can we unlock the full promise of Imo State for generations yet unborn,” he stated.

Ohakim expressed hope that the Golden Jubilee would rekindle faith in what he described as the “Imo project,” and inspire a deeper sense of collective responsibility among citizens at home and in the diaspora.

Imo State was created on February 3, 1976, during Nigeria’s military era, and has since grown into one of the country’s major centres of education, commerce, and cultural influence in the South-East.
