Nigeria trains 250 teachers in the Northeast on Digital Skills

Abuja – The Nigerian Federal Government has concluded a 21-day training program for 250 technical teachers and instructors (TTIs) from the Northeast region, focusing on digital literacy, pedagogy, and trade-specific skills.

The initiative was implemented through the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project, supported by the World Bank under the Federal Ministry of Education.

At the closing ceremony in Gombe, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa emphasised that the program aligns with government efforts to strengthen technical education. Represented by Dr. Muibat Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education, he stated that a skilled workforce is essential for national development as the global economy evolves.

The IDEAS Project, designed to close skills gaps and enhance teacher competence, covered 10 trade areas including:

  • Digital skills
  • Automobile technology
  • Pedagogy
  • Construction
  • Hospitality
  • Garment making
  • Agriculture

Project Coordinator Mrs. Blessing Ugu described the training as “a critical step in strengthening technical and vocational education” and noted that the IDEAS Project has also improved infrastructure at participating schools, including perimeter fencing and security systems.

Dr. Aishatu Umar Maigari, Gombe State Commissioner for Education, commended the initiative for repositioning technical education to better align with national development goals and pledged the state’s continued collaboration.

Participants are expected to implement their new knowledge in classrooms and share skills with colleagues who could not attend.
